Defensive Do's
(Tips to keep you and yours safe!)
|
- Use ATM machines
during the day and use those that are located in well-lighted, high
traffic areas. Keep your doors locked and an eye on your side and
rearview mirrors!
- Avoid underground or multi-story car parking lot
- Use initials instead of first names on mail boxes and in telephone books or directories
- Always have your keys ready to enter your vehicle and home
- Avoid walking or jogging alone - the "buddy system" isn't just for swimming!
- Ladies - hold your purse close to your body and don't carry it by the handles
- Never open your front door to anyone you don't recognize
- Have a viewer or "peep hole" installed on front and back (or side) doors
- As soon as you enter your vehicle, lock the doors, start the engine and drive away - do not linger!
- If you feel uneasy walking to the parking lot from a store, mall, or hospital - request security to escort you
- Teach your children to go to the store clerk and ask for help if you become separated while shopping
- Trust your instincts - if something feels wrong, it probably is
- When taking the bus, sit close to the driver and don't disclose personal information to "new bus friends"
- Do as much as you can to avoid any potentially dangerous situations. Learn to "anticipate and avoid"
- Remember, it's always "better to be safe than sorry"!
